One of the key benefits of using an online proofing solution is the convenience that it provides your teams and clients for being able to review, annotate and approve any digital media content using a standard set of tools. Gone are the days of having to print, draw-on, and scan content, or the need for specialized tools just to provide feedback on webpages, videos or presentations.
Advertising agencies, marketing teams, graphic designers, video producers, illustrators, photography studios, and many more currently use ReviewStudio to manage the review and approval process of their digital media projects.
Supported File Formats
To address this diversity, we’re constantly extending our platform to support the file formats that are commonly used by our customers. Our list now includes:
- Images – JPG, PNG, GIF, TIFF, PSD, 360 Panoramas
- Video – MP4, MOV, OGG, WebM, FLV, AVI, WMV, ASF, ProRes +
- Audio – MP3, WMA, AAC
- Documents – PDF, SVG, DOC(X), PPT(X), XLS(X)
- Web – HTML (either as a ZIP or URL capture)
- 3D – GLB

When given the option of choosing between multiple formats for a project here are a few tips you may want to consider.
Video
As a web-based proofing tool, the only format that is natively supported across all browsers is MP4(H264). Consequently, all video files you upload that are not already MP4 are automatically encoded for playback. While our encoding process preserves the resolution of the original video, we resample the bitrate to 3Mbps in order to ensure that the video can play smoothly across all network bandwidths. Format conversions and resampling may introduce some minor compression artifacts. While these are generally unnoticeable, if you prefer that your collaborators directly view the source video you upload, you can use MP4 (at any bitrate) and choose to bypass our encoding option. Our CDN (AWS Cloudfront) can reliably stream video content up to 10Mbps.
It’s worth mentioning that when you download the file using the “Download File” feature from the Review Canvas, you download the original file that was uploaded. This applies to all file formats.
Documents
Like videos, documents have to be rendered in a web browser by converting them to standard HTML elements (PNG for images, SVG for vectors and text). Because PDF files embed all the information regarding graphics and fonts, they can be very precisely rendered by ReviewStudio.
Microsoft Office formats, on the other hand, do not embed their font information and rely upon the viewer of the file (using an Office application) having the fonts available on their computers. While ReviewStudio does support a wide range of fonts, if proprietary fonts are used within a document or presentation a close substitution may be made.
So if you use specialized fonts, exporting your documents to PDF may be the best option if your review requires a precise representation of your original content.
